“What makes you happy?” Guess this question has been pondered by every one for almost for thousands of years, and everyone has their own definition. Now, If I turn this question around and ask “What makes you unhappy?” – guess I will get universal opinions from all. So, Started figuring out from this aspect, and wondered what are the ingredients of unhappiness. This is called reverse engineering, and I am not going to present all those ingredients here. Instead, I am going to present the recipe of behavior patterns you can use against the “process of unhappiness“. These are prescribed by Art of Living teachers across the world. Art of Living is non-profit foundation established by His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, aka fondly called as Guruji.
a) Opposite forces are complimentary
b) Don’t find intentions in other people mistakes
c) Accept people, and situations as they are(we can acsept every body for who they are)
d) Don’t be a football of others opinion’s
e) Present moment is inevitable and Live in the present
Amazing list, isn’t it? Let’s go ahead and start elaborating on each of these.
What are opposite forces in nature? Day-Night, Summer-Winter, Light-Dark, Good-Bad, Up-Down, Open-Close, Heat-Cold, Happy-Sad, Strong-Weak, Fast-Slow, Hope-Depression, Easy-Difficult, Life-Death… etc., and list goes on & on. What did you observe?
Observation#1 Isn’t it that any of the forces are of no importance without the other? Take example of Fast-Slow – How can you say some one is going faster without having known what is slow? Taking Heat-Cold as an example, how can you say I am feeling Hot without having known how it feels to be cold?
Observation#2 Isn’t it that these forces come one after another? Take example of Light-Dark- How long have you seen Darkness on the earth with out Light? Taking example of Strong Leaders on the earth – How can one say that these leaders never experienced weak moments in their lives?
Apparently, these forces behave in similar fashion in our lives. Every human being on this earth has their good & bad times, happy & sad moments, success & failed attempts etc. But, if we forget this fact that these forces are complementary, then we are going to be taken for ride by these forces. Our lives are not going to be Easy all the time; At the same time, they are not going to be Difficult all the time. These are complimentary in nature that we can’t experience one without the other. In other words, these forces are combined in such a way as to enhance or emphasize the qualities of each other or another. Secondly, we have to understand that these forces are like passing by as waves in ocean. If we are experiencing Dark Times now, we need to have faith that it’s going to be temporary, and Light is going to shine for sure. The combination of 1)Understanding these are complimentary and 2) Understanding these forces passes by as they do in nature – will make how we react in both forces. If we can seed this wisdom in our minds, we will have lesser or negligible egos during our success times, and we maintain our calm and peace during our failure times. This behavior makes us more humble and allows us to act with compassion during our success times, and will increase our perseverance and re bounce strength during our low times.
